During the international conference on "Imam Khomeini and the Islamic Awakening" on Tuesday morning, June 5, 2012, Ali Akbar Velayati, the Iranian Supreme Leader's senior advisor on international affairs, said that anytime the Islamic faith and Muslim power have weakened during Islam's 1400 year history, one individual has raised the flag of Islam and guided the people towards Islam.
He added, "This is why the idea of Islamic Awakening is not a new issue in the Islamic world; we were faced with the attack of colonization and the forced influence of their culture from before the Islamic Awakening."
While stating that the Western colonization attack has been constantly present during the past 200 years, Velayati said, "We must not think that colonization no longer interferes in our country's affairs: those countries are actually using cultural attacks to introduce new replacement models in the lives of Muslims, and supporters of these Western ideologies are unfortunately very active in propagating these ideas in the Muslim world."
He went on to say, “Some of these supporters are unfortunately not aware of the fact that socialist and imperialist ideologies from the West are not compatible with the Islamic Republic and other Islamic countries."
While mentioning that these Western ideologies have been enforced in some countries in past years, the Secretary General of the International Congress on the Islamic Awakening stressed, "Despite the fact that these ideological movements have been tested in some Islamic countries and they have not shown favorable results, some still insist on this process. In spite of all of this, Muslims have chosen to follow the Islamic model and the new wave of Islamic Awakening, which finds its roots in the Iranian Revolution and the words of Imam Khomeini, has taken form."
Velayati said, "Imam Khomeini always believed that if Muslims rely on the principles of Islam, these principles will guide them in this life and the next, and they must try to find their capabilities in order to find success."
The Supreme Leader's senior advisor on international affairs added, "From the start, Imam Khomeini put his efforts into removing the previous regime from power, and his most important goal was the freedom of Palestinians and the fall of the Israeli occupying regime. He also tried to align Islamic countries against the West and against colonization."
In another part of his speech, while stating that the religion of Islam has an essence of progress and improvement, he said, "No other religion in the world has grown as quickly as Islam and if the existing obstacles are removed, Islam can prove to be a comprehensive and eternal religion with which Muslims can fight against Western ideologies."
Velayati went on to say, "Western countries such as France, whose revolution took place 200 years ago, and who claim to believe in freedom and democracy, are still host to racial discrimination and the absence of religious freedom."
While stating that the Iranian model of Islamic Awakening has garnered interest in other Islamic countries that are fed up with Western ideologies, he said, "We are currently witness to developments in North Africa and the Middle East, and we hope that the new Egyptian president will be a supporter of Islamists, because they are against the Israeli regime and the US."
