(FNA)- Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi stressed the country's long-term plans to expand its nuclear fusion industry.

"The nuclear fusion project is one of our most glorious projects which is progressing at a high pace and its most important part is its human resources and creativity," Salehi said in an interview with Khorassan daily on Saturday.

He said that nearly 80 experts in the nuclear fusion field have been trained in Iran, "and this trend will continue".

In nuclear physics, nuclear fusion is a nuclear reaction in which two or more atomic nuclei come very close and then collide at a very high speed and join to form a new type of atomic nucleus. During this process, matter is not conserved because some of the matter of the fusing nuclei is converted to photons (energy).

In relevant remarks in May, the head of Iran's Nuclear Fusion Research Center reiterated that the nuclear fusion science was made indigenous in Iran and achieving any objective in the field was possible.

The Iranian officials have always underscored that they intend to use nuclear technology merely for peaceful purposes, including generating energy.
