Prospect of Iran-US Relations in Post-JCPOA Era

-Iran and the US have a realistic view of their situation after the nuclear agreement. What Rouhani has said about the reduction of tensions between these two countries is an undeniable fact. Tensions have relatively been reduced. One proof of that is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action itself and the other is the arrest of the US marines in the Persian Gulf by Iran’s navy and their immediate release.

-The statement released by the US State Department is also realistic because another part of Rouhani’s speech is about the challenges between the two countries. These challenges still exist to the extent that a medal of honor is given to the navy officers who arrested the US marines. This shows the significance of dealing with the US within the framework of the existing discourse.

-Therefore, one must accept that the tension between Iran and the US has decreased but, compared to the existing challenges, they are not significant.

-The prospect of relations between Iran and the US depends on the desired future which relies on the values and norms of both sides. Based on these values and norms, the prospect of relations between these two countries is not very hopeful.

-But sometimes the prospect is based on a discovery which, although incorrect, is common in our political literature.

-The nuclear agreement was based on this issue. Based on this definition, the prospect of relations between Iran and the US must be considered in a strategic bond during the next decade, although it is very hard to believe.

-In 2017 and after the new president in the US is elected, new slogans will be heard in the capitals of both countries, but Iran and the US will remain committed to their obligations in the JCPOA.

-Thus, if political wisdom is established in both countries, the agreement reached on the nuclear issue will be used as a model for other issues. Future years will be filled with ups and downs in the relations between Iran and the US.

-If Trump is elected, we will be hearing statements similar to those made by Bush, maybe even harsher.

-Europe, the green continent, is a place where Iran and the US could sow their seeds and use their products in their capitals.
