TEHRAN - Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs Ali Ahani held talks with Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Stephania Kraski in Rome on Tuesday.

Ahani had travelled to Italy to participate in the meeting of the Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which was held in La Maddalena, Italy, from July 4 to 5.

The Islamic Republic participated in the meeting for the first time.

During his meeting with Kraski, Ahani criticized the stance that certain countries have adopted toward the issue of human rights in Iran.

Certain Western media outlets and governments have launched a smear campaign about the human rights issue in Iran while they are ignoring blatant human rights violations in other countries, including European states, he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ahani criticized the NATO military campaign against Libya, saying it has only resulted in the destruction of the country’s infrastructures and the killing of civilians.

He added that the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973 was adopted to help protect civilians from further harm, but unfortunately a large number of civilians have been killed in the NATO strikes.

Kraski acknowledged that the situation in Libya is complicated, saying that Italy was put in a situation where it had to militarily intervene in Libya because forces loyal to Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi were targeting civilians.

Elsewhere in his remarks, she commented on Iran’s role in regional developments, stating that Italy is interested in cooperating with the Islamic Republic on Afghanistan.
