Iran, Iraq compete for OPEC secretary position

(MNA) –Iran and Iraq have started intense competition for OPEC Secretary General position.

Reports had it that right now, the rivalry over Secretary General position is between Iran and Iraq. OPEC Secretary General is the highest authority in the organization and he can set production and exports quotas and communicate them to the members.

Saudi Arabia was elected by OPEC members for President of Research Center, the second highest position in OPEC. Abdul Hamid Omar was elected as the head of the research organization in the last meeting.

An informed official provided comments about Saudi Arabia’s election to the position.  “With Abdul Hamid Omar election, Iran and KSA should not have any more tension for the OPEC Secretary General position.”According to OPEC charters’ code, the Secretary-General al-Badri’s term had ended last year. But because of tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran over this OPEC position, his term was extended until the end of 2013.

At the same time the appointment of Abdul Hamid Omar to the second highest position have increased competition between Iran and Iraq. Time will show which country will ultimately be elected as the Secretary General of OPEC.
