In the next stage of the battle between Ahmadinejad and the Principlists, the Guardian Council judged as illegal Ahmadinejad’s decision to assume the role of caretaker Oil Minister after he merged the ministries of oil and energy. Kayhan, Tehran-e Emrooz and Vatan-e Emrooz deemed the protests in Spain as heralding of Ayatollah Khamenei’s remarks last month that the wave of Islamic awakening will reach the heart of Europe.

Trouble with understanding some terms? Check our Glossary of Iranian Political Terms.

(1) In his interview with Fars News Agency, Ahmad Tavakkoli, a key Principlist opponent of Ahmadinejad, stated that he believed voting for Ahmadinejad in the 2009 presidential election was a haram [religiously sinful] act, but he was compelled to do so, since he believed Mousavi –in the event he clinched the presidency- possessed a social base which could undermine the Leadership, while Ahmadinejad’s social base lacked this power.

(2) The actual term in Persian is jen-giri, literally genie-capture, which unlike exorcism does not refer to expelling evil spirits haunting the body, but dominating the jinns and manipulating them for one’s own interests.
