AP - Iran's official news agency said a border clash between Iranian forces and guards from Azerbaijan has killed one Azeri soldier.

IRNA's report late on Monday said the Azeri border guard was shot dead after illegally crossing into Iran.

The news agency quotes Iran's deputy interior minister in charge of security affairs, Ali Abdollahi, as saying a "limited clash" occurred after Azerbaijan guards crossed into Iran and ignored an Iranian order to stop.

The report didn't say when the clash happened but added that both countries are trying to resolve the case through diplomatic channels.

Incidents between the two neighbors are rare. Iran and Azerbaijan share about 470 miles — 760 kilometers — of a common land and sea boundary.
