PRESS TV - A senior Iranian lawmaker says the United States and the Israeli regime's threats to attack Iran over its nuclear program are merely political and military bluffs.

Deputy Head of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Esmail Kowsari told Fars News Agency on Monday that regional and international developments make it hard to believe that Washington and Tel Aviv plan to attack Iran.

He added that the US was caught off guard by the popular uprisings in the region and now fears that it will lose the support of Yemen, Bahrain and other regional countries in the near future.

“Aside from this we are witnessing the Wall Street uprising in which 99 % of the people of this country, who have been oppressed by the 1% ruling capitalists, are protesting against Liberal democracy,” Kowsari added.

He said that the recent Occupy protests as well as US failures in Iraq and Afghanistan have created a severe crisis in the country.

The US and its allies have intensified their anti-Iran rhetoric ahead of the 8 IAEA report on the country's nuclear program.

On November 4, Israeli President Shimon Peres said that an attack on Iran was becoming increasingly more likely.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Knesset on October 31 in an effort to garner support for a military attack on Iran over its nuclear program.

Supported by Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Netanyahu argued that Israel should proceed with efforts to encourage the West to exert more economic and political pressure on Iran. He also emphasized that any action against Iran should be carried out in full coordination with the United States.
