PRESS TV - Following Iran's decision to downgrade ties with the UK, a senior Iranian lawmaker warns that Tehran will deliver a firm response to countries that continue to hatch plots against the Islamic Republic.

Iran's Majlis (parliament) overwhelmingly approved a motion to downgrade relations with the UK to set an example to all such countries, IRNA reported Sunday, quoting Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, a member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy.

In an open session of the Majlis on Sunday, Iranian lawmakers passed a double-urgency bill aimed at downgrading Tehran-London diplomatic ties to the level of charge d'affaires and limiting all economic and cultural collaborations to a minimum level.

The Iranian lawmakers acted on the bill in response to the UK's recent decision to impose unilateral sanctions against the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran, over allegations that Tehran's nuclear program may consist of a covert military agenda.

The Iranian legislator cautioned other countries to keep in mind the legislative action by Iran, adding that the Iranian nation will demonstrate a swift reaction against hostile efforts against the country.

Naqavi Hosseini noted that Iran respects friendly nations and is committed to maintaining amicable ties with them but will firmly resist against any government that attempts to hatch plots to harm the Islamic establishment.
