Zarif: Beginners of a war are not those who end it

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a tweet on the 40th anniversary of the eight-year imposed war against Iran stressed on Monday those who begin a war don’t end it.

“We commemorate our fallen heroes—40 yrs after Saddam’s invasion & start of 8 yr Iran-Iraq war. We stood tall, with the world supporting the aggressor—even w/ chemical weapons.

"Let's remember:

"-We can only rely on ourselves;

"-Those who start a war don’t end it;

"-War has no winner.”

Shahrivar 31 in the Iranian calendar (September 21 this year) is the beginning of the Sacred Defense Week in Iran when Iranians hold special ceremonies to honor the fallen soldiers and cherish the strength and resistance of the people during the eight years of Imposed war on Iran by Iraq’s dictator Saddam Hussein in late September 1980. The war was eventually brought to an end through a UN-brokered cease-fire.

This year, Iran canceled a military parade held annually to mark the war’s anniversary due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 24,400 and infected over 425,000 in the country since March.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a televised video address to the top military commanders and war veterans across the country on the beginning of the Sacred Defense Week said, “The Sacred Defense showed that aggression toward this country is very costly.”

The Leader also added that Iraq’s 1980-88 war with Iran showed the country can defend itself.
