Karzai Condemns Burning Down of Iran Flag

The Afghan President Karzai on Saturday condemned burning of Iran's flag and the photographs of its leaders by a number of Afghan residents in Kabul city.

Speaking at an International Environment Day function in Kabul, President Karzai urged all Afghans not to insult the leaders of the neighbouring countries or their national symbols.

"They [protesters] burned down Iran's flag? It's very bad, burning the photographs of their leaders is also a wrongful act," Karzai said.

Earlier on Thursday, hundreds of people staged an angry protest in Kabul city against the Iranian spies' alleged interference in the internal matters of Afghanistan.

The demonstrators gathered at 10 am in the Shahr-e-Naw Park and marched towards the Iranian Embassy in the Kabul city. The protesters chanted- "Death to Iranian spies in the Afghan Government and Parliament."

Protestors carried photographs of the 2nd Vice President Karim Khalili, Wolesi Jirga members Mohammad Mohaqiq, Latif Pidram and Ahmad Behzad, also of the Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad.

Before dispersing, the protestors torched the Iranian flag and photos of the Iranian officials and their agents.

President Karzai also citicised the media of Afghanistan ans asked them to act responsibly.

"You have the right to criticise the Government and must be like a light when there is darkness everywhere, but keep in mind national unity and work for the nation's interest," Hamid Karzai said.

Karzai emphasised on good relations with the neighboring countries and urged the Afghans not to insult their leaders.
