Iran to attend Geneva II Conference without precondition if invited

IRNA – President Hassan Rohani said here Thursday Iran would participate at Geneva II Conference on Syria if it would be invited to it without any preconditions.

The Iranian president made the comment in a meeting with the UN Secretary Generals Special Envoy on Syria Affairs Lakhdar Brahimi on the sidelines of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly.

President Rohani in the meeting emphasized the urgent need for resolving the Syrian crisis, reiterating, The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to contribute to resolve that crisis.”

The president, meanwhile, emphasized, Everyone must try to put an end to war and bloodshed in Syria in the shortest possible time.

Lakhdar Brahimi, for his part, expressed delight over meeting President Rohani and presented a report on the latest developments in the Syrian conflict.

He also expressed hope that the Islamic Republic of Iran would participate in Geneva II Conference on Syria.

The Assad-government is ready to engage in a ‘Geneva II’ peace conference without preconditions, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on July 22, 2013.

The Syrian National Coalition said on July 26, 2013 it refused to partake in a ‘Geneva II’ peace conference as long as Assad does not vow on beforehand to stay out of the envisioned transitional government.

In May 2013, Iranian Ambassador to the UN Mohammad Khaza’ie said that Iran supported Geneva II.

We believe that, apart from the Syrian sides, all relevant regional and international partners that wield some influence over the parties and could help the Syrians should move towards peace and they must participate in the conference and endeavor towards its success. Irans participation in the conference will depend on the details that we will consider when we receive them,” the Iranian envoy added.
