Ayatollah Khamenei’s landmark fatwa (religious decree on a certain issue), banning insults to early historical figures, particularly the first two Muslim caliphs (whom Shi’as believe usurped the right of their first Imam, Ali ibn-i Abi-Talib (AS) to rule Islamic society) and A’isha, wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), brought praise from well-known Sunni scholars such as Ahmad al-Tayyib, Chancellor of Al-Azhar, the mother of Sunni Islamic Schools. Meanwhile, the US administration’s decision to impose financial and travel restrictions on 8 Iranian officials on charges of human rights abuses was received with contempt by Iranian officials.
