Tehran’s Daily Newspaper Review
From the mid-1980s to mid-1990s it was the Left vs. the Right in Iran. After Khatami’s election in 1997, it turned into Reformists vs. the Right. It was Reformists vs. Principlists since the 7th Majles election in 2002. Ahmadinejad was thought to be a Principlist up until the middle of his first presidential term, when his maverick policies in culture and politics made it hard to label him as such any longer. The rise of the Critical Principlists—the mainstream branch of the Principlist camp whose icons were Mohammad-Bagher Qalibaf, the incumbent mayor of Tehran, Ali Larijani, speaker of parliament, and Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Council of the Nezam’s Expediency Discernment, all failed candidates in the 9th presidential elections in 2005 and potential candidates in near future—began in those days. Jomhouri-e Eslami’s publishing two front page pieces on the accomplished projects of Tehran’s municipality –ruled by Qalibaf—one awkwardly and rather childishly titled “The Beautiful and Large Bridge of Javadieh Opens in South of Tehran”, is self-explanatory: Ghalibaf is most likely the Principlists’ key candidate for the next presidential election, and who knows, perhaps also the Reformists’.

(1) Javadieh is a part of Tehran’s southern district, home to the working class of the capital’s population.

(2) Tamaddon is implicitly referring to Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf who has time and again protested against the government’s plan to segment the Tehran gubernatorial district, which he believes is a plan to divest him from his municipal powers.

(3) Ayatollah Kashani was the leader of the religious branch of the movement for nationalization of the Iranian oil companies in the 1950s. His gradual estrangement from Dr. Mohammad Mosaddeq, leader of the nationalist branch of the movement, is thought to have failed the movement and resulted in the 1958 CIA-led coup that returned Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi to power.
